Quality Matters

Use the best materials you can find and afford.  This is true for fabric, thread, batting, and the tools you use.  There is too much time and effort spent on even a small quilt to have it be less than the best.  Poor-quality fabric is more difficult to work with, can fade, and won't wear as well as top-quality goods.  Poorly constructed, low-quality tools may end up costing you more in the long run by breaking and needing replacement more often.  There are many things you can't control in quiltmaking - selecting high-quality materials is something you can.
